What's a third-party?

A third party is anyone outside the business and the individual concerned who can access the personal data you’re responsible for.

There are 2 types of third parties:

  • The third parties you gave authorization to use the personal data: it can be a contractor, a service provider, a business partner.
  • The third parties the law gave authorization to use the personal data: often a public authority, like tax authorities, the police, a judge.

For example, if you have tax obligations for which you have to declare who are your clients, the tax authority will be considered a third party because it will access the personal data you’re responsible for.
